Inspection Basics

While you might be accustomed to code inspections from a city building inspector, the city requires escalator and elevator inspections from private agencies. The Department of Buildings does contract with private inspection agencies but building owners cannot use these agencies by appointment.

The law requires the building owner to hire a private elevator inspection agency to conduct the yearly escalator inspection. You must make an appointment with the private inspector in advance. They must have a valid license to conduct the work.

Inspection Situations

You need the inspection conducted on new construction, renovations and existing escalators. You also need an inspection if you received a notice of violation and have completed the work to bring the escalator up to code.

Documenting Your Successful Inspection

Your inspector will provide documentation for you to provide the Department of Buildings. While you can submit it in person or via postal mail, if you want a quick way to do things, you may upload it using the DOB NOW: Safety portal. To submit online, first register for the service.

Events That May Warrant an Elevator Inspection

An elevator typically needs to be inspected at least once a year to comply with existing law. However, it may not be a bad idea to have an elevator inspection more frequently than that to ensure that no one gets hurt while using it. Let’s take a look at some good reasons to have an elevator looked at even if there is no obligation to do so.

A Rider Has Reported a Safety Issue

There are many small problems with an elevator that could turn into serious safety issues if they are not addressed in a timely manner. For instance, if a door doesn’t close all the way, someone could potentially fall out while it is in motion. If there is a gap between the door and the floor, it could result in a person tripping or otherwise getting hurt. As a single injury could cost a company thousands of dollars, it is important to take these reports seriously.

You Notice a Potential Safety Issue

If you notice a safety issue with an elevator, do not hesitate to close it and order an inspection be done immediately. For example, you may happen to see that a cable is loose or that the elevator isn’t moving as smoothly as it should. If the fire department or other emergency personnel have had to open the door for a passenger, it is definitely a good idea to have an inspection done.

It’s Always Better to Avoid an Accident

It is always better to have an elevator inspector find that there is nothing wrong than perform one after an accident takes place. Although inspections may cost time and money, they are generally less expensive than the potential payouts to accident victims. They are also less of an inconvenience than the task or rehabilitating a brand’s image after someone gets hurt on its property.
