Each year or two, you need to have a New York City boiler inspection performed by a licensed and certified professional. There are two types of inspections that you may need to have done. Understanding the differences between these services will help you prepare for the arrival of the boiler inspector.

Internal Inspection

New York City authorities may require an internal boiler inspection. This is the longer and more complex type of inspection. In order to be ready for the inspector’s arrival, you will need to make sure that the boiler has cooled to room temperature. You will need to remove the hand hole and manhole plates. Take apart the water supply so that the inspector can check all its parts. The boiler needs to be isolated from other systems for the safety of the inspector.

External Inspection

An external inspection of a boiler involves testing of the controls and safety devices. A current certificate of inspection should be posted. The preparation for this type of boiler inspection is simpler. Any clutter or debris should be out of the boiler room. This should be the normal situation for safety purposes. Parts, boxes and other things should never be stored in a boiler room at any time.

Jurisdictional Requirements for Each Type of Inspection

New York City requires annual internal and external boiler inspections. You should post the inspection certificates on the premises. The inspection results should also be filed with the appropriate authorities. It is your duty to follow up and make sure that the results are received by the city so that you do not incur any fines.
