How the Ambient Temperature Affects Boiler Efficiency

The ambient air temperature plays an important role in boiler efficiency. Net Stack Temperature

The net stack temperature refers to the difference between the flue gas temperature and the ambient temperature in the room where the boiler is located. The higher this number, the lower the energy efficiency of the boiler. Too low of a room temperature or too high of a flue temperature could cause the boiler to consume too much fuel.

Sudden Changes in Ambient Temperature

A sudden change in the ambient temperature of the boiler room could cause an energy efficiency drop of 1 percent or more. For an industrial boiler operating at a high capacity, this could make a big difference in its output and your operational costs. If the ambient temperature in the boiler room fluctuates by more than 20 degrees in a 24-hour period, it is a good idea to consider an energy audit or improvements in the room’s insulation and draft protection.

Energy Efficiency Calculations

Most boiler manufacturers have already performed the energy efficiency calculations for ambient temperatures. Ideally, the temperature of the boiler room should be between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Too much of a deviation from this results in losses of efficiency. There are many reasons why large deviations could occur. These include problems with the system’s fan, a sudden power outage, extreme weather events or someone leaving a door open.
