Workplace safety should be the top priority of any employer. Without a safety plan, workers are more likely to get hurt regardless of how much experience that they have. A single accident could result in multiple workers getting seriously hurt or dying, which can result in lost productivity, lower morale and fines from government agencies. Take a look at some important elements of a plan for safety in the workplace.

Everything Should Be Labeled and Easy to Access

Anything that a worker may need to do his or her job safely should be labeled and easy to access regardless of that person’s physical stature. For instance, decontamination showers or eye wash stations should be in areas that are in close proximity to most work areas. There should also be signs that have words written in multiple language as well as pictures so that people know what they are.

Employees Should Never Do Dangerous Work Unsupervised

If an individual has to crawl into a tight space or work on a machine, that job should be done with a partner or as part of a group. Individuals who are not actively working should be on standby ready to provide or call for help if something goes wrong. Those who must work on their own should be given communication devices, and another worker should check on that person periodically. Employees should never be allowed to work on a machine that they are unfamiliar with. Doing so may make it difficult to obtain or retain a NYC certificate to operate or similar certification.

Employers Should Work to Get Employees to Accept the Plan

Employee acceptance of a safety plan is generally the best way to get it to work as intended. This means that companies should communicate with their workers to create a program that everyone can be proud of. Furthermore, the plan should be updated as new data comes in.
