Any plumber or another technician will look for common problem areas when performing a New York City boiler inspection. These issues are widespread because they arise from inadequate boiler maintenance. There are four important steps that any boiler owner can perform to help avoid these prevalent problems with their own equipment.

Monitor Oxygen Levels

All professional boiler inspections will involve testing oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide levels. These levels should be monitored regularly as well both during and after the warm-up period. If these levels are outside the expected parameters, it can indicate a range of issues and demands immediate professional attention. Left unchecked, the burner can foul the combustion chambers and diminish lifespan.

Inspect the Burner

The burner is the gateway. If the burner performs in an optimal fashion, maintenance requirements will be minimal, repairs will be less likely, and life expectancy will be maximized. Look specifically at the electrical connections. Watch for signs of overheating, including wires and harnesses that have hardened or melted. This can be an indication of chambers that are running at too high a temperature.

Look Beyond the Burner

Examine on the outside of the chambers as well. Inspects fans, blowers and similar equipment. Any buildup of dirt should be cleaned. The burner can be running during this examination, but avoid the main burner firing. Inspect all of the safeties that the boiler has, and remember to look for unsafe conditions that may arise but never create them.

Examine All Vent Pipes

If there’s an issue with condensation, vent pipes will often have a telltale sign in the form of a substance that’s white and powdery. Increasing temperatures to above manufacturer recommended minimums should avoid this condensation in the future. Note that any white power present should be removed from the pipes because it’s acidic and can eat through them.
