Gas stations must abide by specific environmental regulations. In addition, many gas stations have oil or propane tanks and other types of materials that also need to be inspected. Consider these three important safety elements of NYC oil and gas inspection services.
Fire Suppression Equipment
The inspector will look for fire suppression equipment. This includes fire extinguishers, which should be placed near the gas pumps in case a spark were to ignite a fire. Fire extinguishers should also be available in the service office or building in case those that are next to the gas pumps are not accessible due to the flames. The extinguishers must be inspected on an annual basis. They must have a rating and capacity to handle a liquid petroleum fire.
Emergency Communications Systems
Emergency communications systems are also critical to the safety of a gas station. A list of emergency telephone numbers for the fire department, police and ambulance service must be placed near all telephones at the facility. A telephone must be available to employees of the station, and it should be located in the center console. The center console should have clear visibility of all of the pumping stations.
Safety Warnings for Patrons
Clear safety warnings must be posted for all patrons of a gas station to see. The safety warnings should include information about not smoking near the pumps, turning off the engine of the vehicle while pumping gas and warnings about the use of cell phones while pumping liquid petroleum. The safety warning signs must be visible to patrons from a distance of at least 20 feet away without the person needing to strain his or her eyes in order to read the sign. The signs must be illuminated with at least 50 lux so that patrons can read them while pumping gas during the overnight hours.
